​What information do I need to exchange after a car accident?

To ensure your insurance claim is processed smoothly you will need the following information for all drivers and vehicles involved in the incident:

• vehicle info (make, model, year, plate number, VIN) 

• driver info (driver's license number, phone number, street address, email)

• insurance providers and policy numbers

• vehicle's owners name and address if different from driver

• witness contact details

Tip: To save time and reduce the chance of errors, take photos of documentation rather than handwriting details.

When do I need to report to a COLLSION REPORTING CENTRE?

• If combined damage to all vehicles is under $5,000, and there were no injuries or damage to public property, you should report to a CRC within 24-48 hours of the accident.

• What to bring with you:

  • your driver’s licence

  • vehicle ownership/registration

  • proof of insurance (pink slip)

  • other driver's name, address, phone, driver's licence number, insurance company & policy number

  • other vehicle’s license plate number, make, model, colour & VIN

  • names and phone numbers of any witnesses

  • photos of the accident scene/location, vehicle damage, and road conditions, and any dashcam footage

  • your damaged vehicle 

  • the driver of your vehicle at the time of the accident if it was not yourself 

Tip: You can save time at the CRC by initiating the reporting process on line.

When do I need to CALL 911 to report a car accident?

• Someone has an injury or needs medical help

• Combined damage exceeds $5,000 for all vehicles and property involved 

• A driver seems drunk or high 

• A driver leaves the scene without sharing details 

• The crash involves a pedestrian or cyclist

• Public property is damaged i.e. guardrails, poles, street signs, etc.

​​​​Can I report a car accident on line?

Collision Reporting Centres do offer the option to start filing a report online by using the "Start from Home" service on your mobile device. You can complete 85% of the report this way, but you must still visit a Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) in person to finalize it.
